Reflecting his breadth of experience, Dr. Murdock is also a senior adviser at the non-partisan think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., where he is a noted expert in the areas of strategic planning, defense policy, and national security affairs. He directs research projects such as the Project on Nuclear Issues and Beyond Goldwater-Nichols: USG and Defense Reform for a New Strategic Era. He is the author or co-author of numerous publications, including several influential Beyond Goldwater-Nichols reports and Improving the Practice of National Security Strategy: A New Approach for the Post-Cold War World.
Prior to beginning his consulting practice, Dr. Murdock held numerous positions in government. He was the deputy director of strategic planning in the U.S. Air Force, the director of policy planning in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and distinguished professor of military strategy at the National War College. He also served as policy adviser to the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Les Aspin, and had a rotational tour on the staff of the National Security Council as one of President Ronald Reagan’s senior directors.
Before coming to Washington in 1979, he was a political science professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he published his first book, Defense Policy Formation: A Comparative Analysis of the McNamara Era. Dr. Murdock received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his B.A. from Swarthmore College.
Clark lives with his wife Kathleen on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. He is the father of three and enjoys five rambunctious grandchildren, his dog Mindy, gardening, and sunsets over the Bay.
