Give an Hour
Give an Hour has established a network of volunteer, licensed mental health professionals nationwide and in Puerto Rico who donate their time to provide counseling to returning U.S. troops and their loved ones who are affected by the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Give an Hour was founded in September 2005 by Dr. Barbara V. Romberg, a licensed clinical psychologist in the Washington, D.C. area. The network of professionals, who literally give an hour of their time each week, is continually growing, and covers a wide range of services, including individual, marital, and family therapy; substance abuse counseling; and treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
This organization provides financial assistance to Marines and Sailors injured in combat and in training (and to other service members injured while in direct support of Marine units) to help them and their families defray expenses incurred during hospitalization, rehabilitation, and recovery. The goal is to alleviate the financial burden placed on the family so that their focus can be on recovery. The assistance is in the form of grants that may help with immediate needs such as travel, childcare, or lodging, or other problems resulting from lost family wages. Other programs help with longer term needs such as modified homes and vans. The Semper Fi Fund has representatives in the major military hospitals around the country. According to the organization, over 90 percent of every donor dollar spent goes directly to program expenses for the wounded.
Using money and services donated worldwide by concerned Americans, the Foundation seeks to meet unmet needs of wounded service men and women. Examples of projects the Foundation sponsors include Walter Reed Army Medical Center Day Care, Emergency Financial Needs, Transition to Civilian Life, and the Laptop Computer Project. Because the Pentagon Federal Credit Union pays for all overhead costs, 100 percent of all contributions go to the Foundation's programs.
